We NEED to Talk About Your Image!

You’ve probably heard of headshots, maybe even personal branding, or professional branding. But what’s the difference between these terms? It can seem confusing, right? And more importantly, how does this apply to YOU?

Who Needs Branding Photos?

While I don't have scientific data, I’d venture to say about 80% of people need some form of branding photos. Who’s in the other 20%? Likely children (unless they’re pursuing modeling/acting) or individuals without any business or professional connections—which, let’s face it, isn’t most of us.

Think you don’t need branding images because you don’t own a business? Think again. Here are a few examples:

  • Sally Sue, Age 22: About to graduate college, Sally is applying for her first professional job and a graduate program. She’ll need a strong LinkedIn presence and possibly a professional photo for her applications. That three-year-old selfie? It doesn’t cut it anymore.

  • Linda Lou, Age 45: After 18 years at her job, Linda’s new director brings a toxic work environment. She decides to explore other opportunities but realizes she hasn’t had a professional photo since she was hired nearly two decades ago.

  • Barbara Blake, Age 34: Barbara is ready to launch a side hustle now that her kids are more self-sufficient. Scrolling through her phone, she realizes she’s absent from her photos, which are all of her kids. It’s time for some personal focus and professional presentation.

These are just three examples of countless scenarios where updated branding images make a difference.

Let’s dive further  into this example with a look at one of my amazing clients: Elena

Elena is a tech whiz, powerhouse, mom, and wife who works as a virtual assistant. Her job is to help small businesses enhance their efficiency and online presence. Elena needed images that balanced her professionalism with her vibrant, approachable personality.

She opted for on-trend wardrobe pieces in fun colors that complemented her skin tone. To emphasize her down-to-earth vibe, we included action shots of her working barefoot at her computer. The goal? Casual yet professional—anything but stiff and boring. Imagine if her clients’ first impression was a dated headshot instead. Would you trust a virtual assistant’s tech expertise if their own branding looked outdated? Probably not!

What’s the Difference Between Headshots and Branding Photos?

Headshots: These are exactly what they sound like—a photograph of your head, typically from the collarbone up. Corporations often favor headshots for consistency: the same background, the same pose, creating a uniform look. While they serve a purpose, headshots lack personality and individuality.

Branding Photos: These go beyond headshots, allowing your personality to shine. They may include:

  • Outdoor settings (parks, coffee shops, or even your garden).

  • Full-body images.

  • Action shots (interacting with clients or the community).

  • Highlights of unique traits (Do you adore your dog? Bring them!).

Branding photos present you as relatable and approachable, standing out in a sea of thumbnails.

Why Branding Photos Matter

Imagine this: You’re searching for a new hairdresser. Two candidates catch your eye:

  1. A small, outdated headshot alongside a punch-list of services.

  2. A portfolio of vibrant photos showing the stylist at work, techniques they employ, their salon environment, and volunteering at a cancer benefit.

Who seems more professional, approachable, and invested in their craft?

….Thought so.
